Montreal rappers bring on the “Beats & Bars” by Stefano Rebuli
On Oct. 7, The Concordian was able to attend “Beats & Bars,” a hip-hop event hosted by the Astred Collective at Ausgang Plaza in Montreal. The show featured some of the city’s finest buzzing hip-hop artists: Mr. Severe, Jo Compadre, CHUNG, Jo Dolo, and Mike Shabb.
This crop of artists notably showcased versatility, acing it over any production style from modern trap to classic boom-bap. Each rapper also brought their own spin to the table: Mr. Severe and Jo Compadre switched back and forth between these styles effortlessly, while CHUNG’s set was characterized by a smooth, sexy, soulful sound. Jo Dolo’s icy cold delivery sounded equally great over ominous boom-bap production and quick, snappy drill beats. Mike Shabb closed out the show, bringing local producer Nicholas Craven along to perform songs from their recent EP Shadow Moses. He also cycled through some of his earlier melodic hits and viral tracks from the late Jeune Loup, a frequent collaborator of his.
All in all, the first “Beats & Bars” proved to be a success, presenting the different flavours and voices in rap that the 514 has to offer. The show effectively highlighted five unique MCs, all of whom came prepared to deliver.
