Concordia Students reflect on the Turkey-Syria earthquakes
In February, three major earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria. The latest one hit on Feb. 20 and had a magnitude of 6.3-6.4. The earthquakes killed 46,000 thousand people in the first two weeks.
At Concordia, the Turkish Student Association collects donations to send to the regions affected by the earthquakes. Many Turkish and Syrian students have had to grapple with the destruction caused by the earthquake, and some feel Concordia has not done enough to support them.

Montrealers call for justice for Nicous D’André Spring
On Feb. 10, the Montreal community marched through the city to call for justice for Nicous D’André Spring. The 21-year-old rapper, poet, and boxer died on Dec. 24 while being illegally detained in Bordeaux Prison. Protesters called for the release of the footage of Spring’s death.

Montrealers gather to commemorate Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirit People
On Valentine’s Day, the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal organized a vigil for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirit People. Protesters called out colonialism and police inaction as causes of this femicide.

One year of war in Ukraine
Feb. 24 marked the one year anniversary of the war in Ukraine. As battles rage on, the Ukrainian community in Montreal and throughout the world hopes this second year will be the last.

Concordia starts to fulfill the recommendations of the Task Force on Anti-Black Racism
The task force’s final report came out four months ago, and Concordia is starting to take action. On Feb. 6, President and Vice Chancellor Graham Carr unveiled a temporary plaque to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the 1969 Black student protests.

A farm in Pierrefonds helps socially isolated individuals return to the job market
This non-profit organization called D-Trois-Pierres teaches its participants social and professional skills that they can incorporate to the job market. However, they too are hit hard by the current labour shortage.
