→ News Editors*
Pitch and write timely news stories for the campus community, including:
Concordia & CSU news
Campus news
Montreal news as it pertains to Concordia students
Breaking news
Coordinate with News team members to delegate weekly beats
Work with the Features team to develop investigative pieces
Work with the Social Media Manager to ensure stories are posted on as they break, including live-tweeting events, live-streams from Instagram, etc
Collaborate with creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the news section
Edit and curate all stories in the news section
Familiar with CP Style, as well as article formatting
Must be interested in ethical and unbiased reporting methods. Objectiveness and knowledge of journalism ethics are required. Editors must be able to make informed decisions when issues arise and work with contributors to ensure reporting meets The Concordian’s ethical standards.
→ Features Editor*
Pitch and write long-form investigative and data-driven stories on Concordia-related news to be worked on and published on a 4-week cycle
Organize and facilitate collaboration between a team of editorial, research, and creatives working on the same story
Work with creative teams to develop interactive visualizations
Develop and manage a features newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the features section
Edit and curate all stories in the features section
Must be a strong writer in long-form journalism. Completion of the feature writing course at Concordia is considered an asset.
→ Podcast Editor
Pitch and select podcast shows to be produced on a weekly, rotating basis
Pitch, develop, and curate stories to be used for podcast format, collaborating with the editorial team to collect audio when needed
Work with Creative Director to decide and maintain The Concordian’s podcast style
Develop various types of storytelling by writing scripts, recording audio, and editing to best present compelling stories to listeners
Coordinate editors and guests for recordings and meetings as necessary
Find and invite guests to shows
Edit, approve, and post shows on various platforms
Manage a weekly podcast newsletter
Work with Ad Team to write and record podcast ads
Note: All section Editors have the option and the liberty to create or contribute to a podcast
→ Community Editor
Pitch and write stories on Concordia’s community, including:
Man on the street interviews
Student and faculty projects
Student and faculty profiles
Intriguing human interest stories about students and faculty
Unusual/interesting stories of things going on around Concordia
A weekly restaurant review
A weekly bar review
Concordia events and calendar
Collaborate with a creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly community newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the Community section, excluding Opinions
Edit and curate all stories in the Community section, excluding Opinions pages
Should be good at finding stories and have a deep interest in people. Ideally knows a lot of people in diverse Concordia communities and knows what is going on.
→ Opinions Editor
Pitch and write humorous columns and op-eds about Concordia’s community or other timely topics relevant to our community
Manage and edit all incoming letters to the editor
Collaborate with EIC and staff on the weekly editorial
Pitch ideas for comics
Collaborate with a creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly opinions newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the section
Edit and curate all articles in the section
Assist the Community Editor in putting together the section
Must be a strong humor writer, able to research and write convincing op-eds which acknowledge all sides of an argument. Opinions are a part of the Community section, so editors will work closely together.
→ Sports Editor*
Pitch and write weekly news on deadline about the Concordia/Montreal sports community, including:
Stingers news and scores
Concordia sports clubs and student athlete profiles
Concordia student sports achievements
Local to national sports news and scores, when relevant
Montreal sports stories
Produce stories with in-depth sports analysis on a professional level
Collaborate with a creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly sports newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the sports section
Edit and curate all stories in the sports section
Must have a strong interest in a variety of sports (hockey, football, tennis, etc.) and possess general knowledge of local teams and players. Schedule must allow for attendance of Stingers games.
→ Music Editor*
Pitch and write weekly news on deadline about Concordia’s music community, including:
Concordia/Montreal musician profiles
Concordia/Montreal concerts and music events
News stories of interest to Concordia Music students
Reviews and op-eds on music-related topics
Produce stories with in-depth music analysis on a professional level
Collaborate with a creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly music newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the music section
Edit and curate all stories in the music section
Must be interested in a large variety of music genres and have a flexible schedule to attend music venues and interview artists.
→ Arts Editor*
Pitch and write weekly news on deadline about Concordia’s Fine Arts community, including:
Concordia artist profiles
Concordia art openings, events, and performances
News stories of interest to Concordia Fine Arts students
Concordia-related events around Montreal
Columns or op-eds on art-related topics
Produce stories with in-depth art analysis on a professional level
Collaborate with a creative team on all visuals and projects related to your section
Develop and manage a weekly arts newsletter
Manage contributors and pitches for the arts section
Edit and curate all stories in the arts section
Candidates are ideally associated with Concordia’s Fine Arts programs, diverse knowledge, and developed taste in various art genres and mediums.
→ Video Editor
Create and curate all video content for The Concordian
Pitch and create content & newsworthy stories
Collaborate with the editorial team to direct, film & produce stories in video format
Collaborate with social media manager on creating content for social platforms
Be an on-screen personality and provide voice commentary for most of The Concordian’s video content
Must have experience in working with a professional camera, sound equipment and using professional video-editing software. Flexible schedule is essential.
→ Photo Editor*
Create and curate all photo content for The Concordian, responsible for making sure photos are in on time for all stories which require them
Attend events, organize photoshoots, accompany/coordinate with reporters to get the best visual for the story
Pitch/deliver photo stories to the team
Manage your photo team and contributors
Organize photo drive and build/maintain stock photo assets
Must have experience in working with a professional camera. Flexible schedule is important.
→ Illustrations/Comics Editor
Create and curate illustrations and comics for The Concordian, responsible for making sure illustrations are in on time for all stories which require them
Collaborate with team to brainstorm on ideas to create compelling visualizations for articles or stand-alone comics
Manage your contributor list and illustration/comics pitches
Connect with Concordia’s community to give artists opportunities to publish their work
Organize/manage the illustrations drive, column graphics and all stock illustration assets
Provide a portfolio of your work that shows your ability to tell stories through drawing.
→ Graphics/Interactive Editor
Create and curate interactive infographics, maps, 3D models, and animations for The Concordian
Develop and maintain a design style for all web-based graphics
Work with the production team to integrate graphics into Webflow
Work closely with the Features team to execute visions for long-form storytelling, simplifying and visualizing data when needed
Collaborate with the visuals team when graphics require multiple formats
Manage your contributor list and graphics/interactive pitches
Connect with Concordia’s community to give artists opportunities to publish their work
Organize/manage the graphics drive and stock elements
→ Advertising Managers
Sell advertisements to Concordia students, groups and local businesses
Meet a weekly ad quota
Manage third-party web advertising (Google ads, etc)
Organize and maintain sales presentation (media kit) and other ad-related documents
Maximize ad revenue for The Concordian and sustain the advertising campaign throughout the year
Create and execute in-house marketing campaigns
Please provide any marketing work or portfolio if possible
Sales experience and networking abilities a major asset
→ Social Media Manager
Develop and maintain an innovative social media strategy & schedule, with the goal of maximizing audience reach and website clicks
Manage The Concordian’s social media platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, and any additional platforms you would like to experiment with
Promote The Concordian’s content on social media in correlation with the news cycle and engagement patterns in a timely manner.
Post breaking news as it is published, coordinating livestreams and live-tweeting with editorial staff as necessary
Engage with our online audience, provide links between our followers and staff, and coordinate with staff to execute your own content ideas.
Have a basic knowledge of editing software
Assist ad team and management with The Concordian’s in-house marketing
→ Head Copy Editor*
Edit all articles for grammar, style, and clarity on the deadline for the weekly news cycle.
Advanced knowledge of CP Style, experience in editing, and excellent writing skills is required.
* Applicants will be asked to complete an editing test later in the application process.
→ Production Assistant
Assist production manager in laying out the print newspaper (InDesign/InCopy)
Follow style guides with attention to detail
Assist production manager in creating interactive layouts on Webflow
Work collaboratively with multiple departments to execute a vision
Must be available to work production cycles in person (2-3 days every other week). Experience in newspaper layout, working with InCopy is not necessary (but awesome). Working knowledge and familiarity with InDesign is a must. Perfectionist attitude, attention to detail - be able to spot the small things. Coding and web design experience is preferred. Willing to teach skills if you are willing to learn! Other design responsibilities and opportunity to pitch ideas will be available to you if you wish to expand your knowledge and portfolio.
