Hello Concordians,
I’m Joelle, your Opinions Editor for Volume 40 of The Concordian. I’m in my last year at Concordia and readier than ever to tackle these last semesters.
A little about me: I’m a journalism major, with two minors (law and society and women’s studies) because I can’t stick to just one subject. My interests include travel, fashion, books, and the only sport I watch is Formula One. You can find me around campus hanging out at Loyola in the journalism newsroom or The Concordian’s office, and in the library at Sir George Williams.
Hot Take
Welcome to Hot Take: a place for thoughts I had while watching the latest, hottest movie or series.
This week’s hot take: Hustlers (2019)
After the stories of fraudsters Anna Delvey and Elizabeth Holmes were adapted for entertainment last year, scammer stories took over and I fell victim to them. It was only a matter of time before I had to watch this other adaptation of a true scam story. The movie centres around struggling strippers who set up a way to fraud their clients during the 2008 financial crisis. The plot was interesting, but the ending was underwhelming. Although I found the special appearances from Lizzo and Cardi B a little bit forced and their screen time unnecessary to the development of the plot, the main cast was funny and delivered good performances. It was a good schemestress movie for a fun night, but nothing amazing that I would watch again. Hustlers is available to watch on Netflix Canada.

Pitches, Bitches
Fast fashion and the rise of Shein with TikTok. Should everyone avoid it? What about the people who can afford better quality but prefer to buy an excessive amount for cheaper? Is it frustrating or justifiable given the constant cycle of fashion?
People care more about their wedding than they do about their marriage. Have you been to a wedding this year? Was it a little too much? Do you know a lot of people who got divorced?
