Welcome back!
It’s back-to-school baby! I’m Joelle, your Opinions Editor for Volume 40 of The Concordian. I’m in my last year at Concordia and readier than ever to tackle these last semesters.
A little about me; I’m a journalism major, with two minors (law and society and women studies) because I can’t stick to just one subject. My interests include travel, fashion, books, and the only sport I watch is Formula One. You can find me around campus hanging out at Loyola in the journalism newsroom or The Concordian’s office, and in the library at Sir George Williams.
Hot Take
Welcome to Hot Take: a place for thoughts I had while watching the latest, hottest movie.
This week’s hot take: Netflix’s Do Revenge (2022)
Drea Torres (Camila Mendes) is at the height of popularity when her boyfriend Max (Austin Abrams) leaks a nude video of her. On her side, Eleanor (Maya Hawke) never forgave a childhood friend who framed her as a predator after coming out as gay. With a plot inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, the movie follows Eleanor and Drea as they plot to take down each others’ nemeses.
Do Revenge is your new Gen Z comedy filled with classic teen film clichés. This made me wonder: “Do all men with motorcycles just always carry an extra helmet with them in case they meet a damsel in distress, or is it just always a coincidence?”
The comic relief is found in the over-the-top characters that, although clichés, are adapted to today’s tastes. For example, the popular boy Max and founder of the “CIS Hetero Men Championing Female-Identifying Students League” that encourages your classic preppy white boys to “be allies.” Although I found the voice-over unnecessary, the fashion was a great highlight. They were so bold in their fashion choices for this movie that it makes it hard to believe the characters are teenagers, but I like that they fully committed to the aesthetic throughout the movie. I mean, who wouldn’t want pastel as their school colours? This movie made me think about how revenge is messy and will sometimes make a situation worse, but is sometimes necessary to find answers. You should watch Do Revenge if you want a classic rom-com with a Gen Z queer twist.
