Grab a prompt and do some drawing this reading week!
Hey everyone!
Happy October, and welcome to the best season! This time around we’ve got FOUR graphics to accompany opinion editorials for the upcoming print issue, coming out October 17th. If any of the articles below interest you and you’d like to claim one, shoot me (Carleen) an email at graphics@theconcordian.com ASAP to do so. Also — don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, or ideas for visuals you’d like included in your student newspaper, we’re open to hear ‘em!
These graphics are due back on Thursday, October 12th at midnight.
Title: Demystifying Bouldering Culture
Description: Indoor bouldering has exploded in popularity, but it can be difficult to understand the scene and its lingo. This article will demystify what bouldering is, what the atmosphere is like, and tips for getting started.
Suggestion: The ultimate climbing gym-goer: Beanie, patagonia shirt, nylon pants, about ten million carabiners, and a chalk bag the size of their head. They’re saying something like “Did you see me flash that V4?”
Title: What is Girl Math?
Description: Girl math is a recent term used to describe the tendency for girls to manage their finances based on loopholes/faulty logic. The article talks about whether it's justified from the perspective of a future accountant, or just the newest release in sexism.
Suggestion: A calculator whose screen reads “Girl Math, or are we just poor?”
Title: AI and Relationships
Description: How will the dating world work once AI infiltrates that sphere (has it already)? What would it be like to have an AI partner? What does this mean about where we’re heading?
Suggestion: Something that conveys loneliness/isolation and dependence on technology — maybe four boxes/rooms with people inside them, all on their phones/laptops in the dark?
Title: The Indefensible Defense of Russel Brand
Description: How the alt-right’s reaction to Russell Brand’s allegations of sexual violence are indicative of the state of women’s rights in relation to online spaces and online conspiracies.
Suggestion: A more serious topic — I would suggest a visual of women standing together in solidarity. You could incorporate meaningful protest slogans — “Hands off our bodies”, “We Will Not Be Silenced”. (we can chat about this one!)
That’s all for this print issue! Remember to email me at graphics@theconcordian.com to claim a graphic — Otherwise, if you’d like to be added to our list of graphics contributors, click here.
